GnarBurst came to be shortly after hop selection wrapped up in nearby Yakima. Brewer Ryan Alvarez and the rest of the Boss Rambler crew hosted RahrBSG team members Terry Little and James Owen for a collaboration with Totally Natural Solutions Senior Innovation Scientist Breeze Outhwaite. Here’s what Breeze has to say about her visit.
RahrBSG: Hey Breeze! How’d it go at Boss Rambler?
Breeze Outhwaite, TNS: All the teams were super friendly and welcoming – James, Terry, Ryan, and all the others. Ryan was super open to collaboration and keen to learn more. His interest [in TNS Hop Oils] allowed us to have practical conversations about using the products in a variety of beer styles. Also, I had a great pumpkin beer while I was there!
RahrBSG: What makes HopBurst® Nectaron® a great option for a West Coast IPA like this one?
Breeze: HopBurst® Nectaron® offers intense true-to-type aroma. In addition, its innovative properties can help brewers increase profitability and efficiency while reducing beer losses. These guys are true innovators, using advanced hop extracts to create great tasting, tropical IPAs with aromas intense enough to knock you off your surfboard.
Next, we followed up with Ryan Alvarez to hear his side of the West Coast story.
RahrBSG: Have you worked with TNS Hop Oils before?
Ryan: No, this was our first time using TNS Hop Oils. I’ve been here for a year, and our brewery hasn’t used many hop products like these. Along with the owners here, I wanted to learn more about them. Breeze was here for hop selection and kind enough to stop by for a brew day.
RahrBSG: How’d brew day go?
Ryan: Brew day was awesome. The hop oils were very easy to use. Breeze recommended we try a layering approach. We used half of our TNS HopBurst® Nectaron® for dry-hopping after knockout on day one. We used the second half on day two.
RahrBSG: And what about Gambrinus IPA Malt? What’d you think?
Ryan: This was our first time with Gambrinus IPA Malt too. I don’t use a lot of Crystal Malt in my West Coast IPAs. I like brewing lighter, super-pale modern West Coasts. We love ‘em around here. So I wanted to see what this could do.
RahrBSG: What were you going for with GnarBurst?
Ryan: We were going for a modern West Coast IPA. Low IBUs, super aromatic, pale color. We used Nectaron® T-90 pellets in addition to HopBurst® Nectaron®. Then we used Citra® to highlight the citrus and tropical profile. There’s also Simcoe® in there for a touch of dank.
RahrBSG: How did the beer turn out?
Ryan: This is a fun one. Gambrinus IPA Malt is a great modern base malt for IPAs. It really lets the hops do their thing. You can just leave it alone or add some Crystal in there if you really want to.
We’d like to extend our thanks to the Boss Rambler crew for hosting our team and Breeze from TNS. As always, reach out to your RahrBSG rep to learn more about great ingredients from TNS, Gambrinus Malting, and more!
