2022 Crop Outlook from NZ Hops:
“As the hop bines begin their journey from the field to the kilns, NZ Hops is on the home stretch of a successful 2022 growing season. After the 2020 hailstorm that caused huge losses to New Zealand’s 2021 hop crop, we’re all looking towards a great harvest. The Nelson Tasman region, New Zealand’s hop growing capital, experienced a good winter giving the hops their proper period of rest in their dormant state. A good, albeit relatively wet, spring followed.”
“Although the rain is welcome in our sunny region, wet springs can cause some challenges for hop growing. Some of our northernmost growers, who experienced the highest rainfall levels of our greater region, battled to keep the feet of their hop plants from being too wet – especially in young plantings. Overall, however, across the top of the South Island the 2021-2022 growing season weather proved to be nearly ideal for hops.”
“Our growers have taken note of a high lupulin content this year, with cones still weeks away from being harvested already giving off big aromas.”
“We’re very early into the harvest but the consensus is that the growing season has led way to what may be a great harvest and a bumper hop crop in the Nelson-Tasman.”
